World Cup Soccer!
OK, as an American I found myself in a strange situation when in 2002 I happened to be living in Japan when the World Cup came to town. I thought I would ignore it like I had when it was in America 1994 but I found it impossible. The Japanese (and the Koreans who co-hosted the Cup) went soccer mad and I got caught up in the spirit of the competition. It did not hurt that the USA team did well that year and there was nothing else on the television. Well four years later I find myself still interested in the World Cup and was watching the England vs. Trinidad game yesterday in the only office with a TV. It reminded me of the 1950's college stunt of cramming as many people as possible into a telephone booth, that office was packed. We even had a native of Trinidad in the group and I think I was the only one routing for England. After a long 80 minutes before the first goal I text messaged my friend English Rich in London to ask if England would ever score. No sooner than I hit "send" England headed one into Trinidad’s net and England was up 1-0. A short time later another goal from England made the game 2-0. All nice and good until later in the night when German TV replayed the first goal by Crouch and it was very apparent that he pulled down on the Trinidad's defenders dreadlocks to make the header. Not legal in soccer (or any sport that I can think of) and the Trinidad fans are going crazy! (I blame the rum) The video I have is the reply of Crouch's foul. Ouch! OK, unless the US beats Italy I will not bother you all with soccer for a while.
